Confused by all the Canadian immigration abbreviations you keep coming across during your research and application process? You’re not alone in that. There are so many acronyms involved that it’s easy to get overwhelmed.

Let’s talk about the most common Canadian immigration abbreviations and their meanings:

PNP – This means Provincial Nominee Program. The program is an immigration pathway which involves specific provinces creating their own criteria for selecting new immigrants who will live in the province in question. 

PR – Permanent Resident or Permanent Residency. A Permanent Resident is someone who has been granted Permanent Residency which is the official right to reside in the country before possibly being granted citizenship.

IELTS – International English Language Testing System. The International English Language Testing System ( IELTS) is an international standardized test of English language proficiency for non-native English language speakers. You’ll need to take this test and pass it to show that you can understand and communicate in English. 

CRS – Comprehensive Ranking System. The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is the points-based system that the Canadian government uses to assess and score your profile and rank you in the Express Entry pool. Your score will be calculated based on your level of education, work experience and transferability of skills. 

ITA – Invitation to Apply. An Invitation to Apply is an invitation from the Canadian government to selected individuals from the Express Entry pool that allows them to apply for permanent residence. 

ECA – Educational Credential Assessment. An Educational Credential Assessment is a document which verifies that your foreign degree, diploma, or certificate is valid and equal to a Canadian one. You will need to submit your credentials to an organization approved to verify such documents. 

IRCC – Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada is the department of the Government of Canada with responsibility for matters dealing with immigration to Canada, refugees, and Canadian citizenship.
