For applicants to the Student Direct Stream (SDS), four additional English language examinations are now being accepted by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) as of August 10, 2023.
Student Direct Stream
The Student Direct Stream (SDS) is a simplified procedure for getting a study permit for Canada.
This program, created for overseas students, provides a quicker processing time for qualified applicants from particular nations, including Vietnam, China, India, and the Philippines.
The Value of Language Competence
For international students who intend to further their studies in Canada, language ability is a vital consideration.
During their stay, it guarantees successful communication and academic performance.
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) were previously recognized by the IRCC as meeting this requirement.
However, the most recent revision gives students more flexibility by broadening the selection of recognized language examinations.
The following are some examples of acceptable English language exams for Student Direct Stream
Program for Assessing English Language Proficiency in Canada (CELPIP) Academic
Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT), General
Pearson Test of English (PTE), and Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL)
Students may also apply for a study visa in Canada by taking the General Training or
Academic examinations of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
It’s crucial to emphasize that starting August 10th, the IELTS requirements for the SDS will also change:
- For applications submitted starting on August 10, 2023, IELTS Academic overall band score of 6.0 is necessary; this score is calculated as the average of all individual skill component results.
- For applicants who submitted their applications before August 10, 2023, IELTS Academic with a score of 6.0 is necessary in each skill area (speaking, listening, reading, and writing).
- The same goes for applicants for IELTS General Training, who must obtain a score of 6.0 in each skill part whether they apply before or after August 10, 2023.
Minimum score necessary to qualify
To qualify for the Student Direct Stream (SDS), students must demonstrate
in all four language skills—listening, reading, speaking, and writing.
